George Sarrinikolaou

George Sarrinikolaou joined ISC in October 2009 as senior program officer in the Climate and Environment program.

Previously he was the manager of sustainability initiatives at The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. In that role, he advised the Port Authority’s Board of Commissioners and senior staff in developing sustainability policies and projects. He helped create and managed the Port Authority’s Sustainability Program, which focused on climate change mitigation, carbon neutrality, and adaptation. As part of the program, he conducted that agency’s first greenhouse gas emissions inventory, which included the emissions of the aircraft, ships, and vehicles that use the Port Authority’s facilities. He also made the agency’s first purchase of carbon offsets, implemented a policy for sustainable design, developed green construction contract specifications, and supported the environmental management of World Trade Center redevelopment.

George is the author of “Facing Athens: Encounters with the Modern City.” He has also written for The New York Times and reported for CNN and Public Radio International. He holds a Master of Public Administration and a Master of Arts in English from Columbia University, and a BA cum laude in English from Cornell University.
