Description
The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) is seeking a Finance Director to develop and maintain high quality and efficient financial management systems that ensure financial compliance and accountability maximize the return on unrestricted funds, minimize risk to the organization and facilitate financial planning. The Director of Finance oversees budgeting, accounting and financial reporting systems. Supervises the annual financial audit and internal reviews, and provides orientation, training and advice to financial and program staff in eight international offices. The position requires international travel. Organization Description
ISC is an independent non-profit organization that gives passionate, committed people the tools, skills, and resources they need to make their communities better places to live. Our current areas of programmatic growth include strengthening democratic institutions and citizenship in transition countries; helping communities in the US and China become more resource efficient and transition to low-carbon economy; and supporting sustainable community development particularly in areas recovering from natural disasters or vulnerable to climate disruption. With our headquarters in Montpelier, Vermont, and offices in China, Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo, the Caribbean and Washington, DC, ISC has an international staff of approximately 90 people and an annual budget of approximately $14M. Since our founding in 1991 by former Vermont Governor Madeleine M. Kunin, ISC has led transformative community-driven projects in 23 countries across the globe.
Responsibilities
- Establishes policies and practices for and administers the accounting and financial management systems and standards of the organization.
- Provides financial and accounting support to program managers and field offices.
Oversees preparation and monitoring of budget. - Supervises the annual financial audit and internal controls and reviews.
Manages program grant, donor and contract compliance. - Reports, measures and interprets the results of financial operations.
Compares performance against budgets and prepares appropriate analyses of the organizations financial position. - Directs cash management systems.
- Coordinates with other staff on procurement, IT, and other office facilities and services.
- Supervises, trains, advises and reviews headquarters and field office accounting staff.
Relationships
- Reports to Vice President for Finance and Administration.
- Works closely with ISC Vermont, Washington DC and other US based staff.
- Regular contact with overseas finance teams concerning financial management and reporting of international offices.
- Daily contact with accounting and other operations team staff.
- Periodic contact with management team.
- Primary contact for banks, investment managers and independent auditors.
Qualifications
- Minimum bachelors degree but CPA, MBA, or MPA strongly preferred.
- 7-10 years in senior-level accounting and financial management position, preferably in a nonprofit international assistance context.
- Excellent manager with strong leadership potential.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, A-133 and other federal cost principles and regulations.
- Experience in planning and supervising fiscal processes including budgeting, financial management and analysis.
- Experience with automated accounting systems such as Blackbaud, as well as facility with QuickBooks, Excel and Windows.
- Experience with business processes automation and improvement, including web-based tools.
- Demonstrated experience and success working both independently and in a team.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills. - Willingness to perform all levels of accounting functions.
- Familiarity with multi-currency accounting/international operations.
- Ability to travel.
- Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to ISCs mission.
