Educating for Sustainability

All of ISC's work comes back to the power of ordinary people coming together as a community to transform their worlds. As the next generation, young people play a critical role in making sure a community will continue to thrive and grow even when our specific project is over.

With this in mind, ISC launched education projects in Ukraine that focused on the local environment and community. As our partner Shelburne Farms defines it, Education for Sustainability is learning that links knowledge, inquiry, and action to help students build a healthy future for their communities and the planet.

For most educators involved in the project, this was their first experience with teaching outside the traditional lecture format, fully engaging children, and actively involving the community in the curriculum:

I would like to tell how ISC helped me improve my teaching abilities. Before, children took my manner of teaching as permissiveness. Now I have managed to find a way to communicate with children. Now they understand me and we are united by common interests and actions.
